Wheel Pants for 4 Star-40
Dick Lahaye

Wheel Pants really dress up a nice looking aircraft ! Here is a building project that's easy and works well with any aluminum landing gear. Check the pictures below. If you like the looks it gives the models, try this easy project and your model will really look sharp.

4 Star-40 with wheel pants

Construction

Each Pant is made up of 4 pieces (See Pant drawing). The center is made of 2 pieces of 1/2" balsa. (See part drawing). Allow about 1/8" clearence from wheel.

The outside of pant is made of 1/4" balsa and is the outline of pant (see part drawing).

The inside is made of 1/8" hard plywood and will be used to anchor pant to the aluminum gear, the shape is same as balsa side.

CA the balsa center pieces together, check that wheel will fit without rubbing, then add the balsa outside piece on the centers ( note Left and Right Pant ). Add the plywood piece to the pant. Shape and sand the "Pant" to the desired contour. I used a Dremel tool for shaping the Plywood part.

The pants can be mounted two ways, by drilling holes thrugh aluminum landing gear and using 4-40 screws with blind nuts in the plywood, or by placing the 4-40 screws and blind nuts just outside the aluminum landing gear and use Washers to clamp Pant to landing gear, but you might need 1/8" shims under the washers to keep a level clamping surface. (see installation diagram below).
